"COVER THE BALL!"By David LuskBack when Paul "Bear" Bryant was coaching for the University of Kentucky, an odd thing happened during a game against Tennessee. As Bryant told it, "We fumbled right in front of our bench, and in the resulting, melee, a box holding eight footballs was turned over. Suddenly, there were nine footballs flying loose on the field. No one knew for sure which one was actually in play." As it turned out, Tennessee recovered five footballs while Kentucky recovered, four, so the officials awarded the ball to, you guessed it, Tennessee." The same kind of confusion reigns in "Christianity" today. The old devil has done a great job of pouring out his brand of "truth" before believers. Ideas and opinions abound on all sides of us. Thus it is difficult for even the most ardent follower of Christ to keep his eyes on what is genuine "truth." Some would yell, "It doesn't matter what ball you cover, just fall on a ball!" Some followers of Christ say, "It doesn't matter what you believe, just so you are sincere in believing something." Believers get so confused. Some claim that there is no "ultimate truth," but if all scripture is indeed breathed out by God (2 Tim.3:16), then how can everybody believe different things and all be correct? One gets the impression that God has only one "football" on our field, and we must find it, then hold it fast. We are told to seek truth, search for it, love it, and follow it. (Acts 17:11) After all, Jesus said if you don't have this truth as your guide, you will not pass judgment. (John 12:48) There is but one living and enduring word of God (1 Peter 1:23). Don't worry that you will be like the confused players. God's word is living and active. It shines forth as a light in the darkness. Like wheat growing next to tares (weeds), you can tell the difference. Take it and hold on for dear life! 1 Peter 1:23 (New International Version) Union Valley Church of Christ

Just as we limit sweets in our children's diets, we also need to set healthy limits in other areas. We can do this by creating appropriate stages and boundaries. |
