Union Valley Ministries

ICT is a ministry to the underprivileged in the area. For many years, we have had our church van driver making the bi-weekly six mile trip out to the "Independent Care of Texas" home, east of Union Valley. These people lack the skills to live alone, but they are really sweet people who need just a little loving help. We pick up the worshippers who want to ride to our services (Sunday morning, evening small groups, and Wednesday evenings.) Then we deliver them back, safe and sound, to their apartments at the center. One couple has volunteered to hold a weekly Bible Study at the home, and we sponsor an occasional "day out" for those who want to go shopping or attend our all-church functions. These people turn out to be "our favorites."

Leadership Training For Christ-- Our young people look forward every year to what they call "L.T.C." This activity is an annual, state-wide competition with other youth groups from all around. It is a wonderful opportunity for the young people of our congregation to learn more about the Bible as well as learn more about being spiritual leaders.

They compete in such activities as "Bible Bowl" (an all-day quiz given over a pre-selected Bible book) "Public Speaking", "Bible Reading," "Puppets," "Drama" "Posters" and more. Each participant is awarded either a gold (excellent) silver (good) or bronze (third) for their efforts. Some of our teens come home laden with gold plaques or other awards. It is great fun.

Summer youth camp-- Our young people anxiously await, also, our annual "youth camp." The churches of Christ sponsor many such camps in the remote area. We have "Camp Deer Run" in East Texas, "Pettyjohn Springs Youth camp" in Oklahoma and camp "Bluehaven" just to name a few. Our youth director chaperones these teens to the gathering, stays with them during the week, and sees them safely home at the end of the stay. While there, the teens are offered all kinds of wholesome activities and Bible studies to bring them closer to Jesus. Attendance is open to any young person who is willing to keep to the rules and standards of the camp.

Weeknight Bible Studies--On any arranged evening, Monday through Saturday, (the host chooses) one of our Bible teachers comes into the home to teach a simple yet interesting Bible study. Anyone from one to six is usually best for such a class. Our goal in these studies is merely to teach the Scriptures. We are not there to "sell" anything--not even a denomination. There is no cost involved. Any question at all can be asked in such a setting (one teacher always says, "There is no such thing as a 'silly question' --the only 'silly' thing, is the question you don't ask.") People who have studied like this will testify that such home studies have helped them immensely in understanding their Bibles. Anyone can have such a study; simply call our church office.
